Logical Recovery During restore
Posted in 2010
User encountered a logical restore requesting logs prior to a level 0 backup's checkpoint time (log 26019 instead of expected 26054). The issue was resolved when the user realized active transactions existed at backup start time spanning multiple log files. The restore process correctly requires logs containing the beginning of these open transactions to enable rollback during recovery, even though they predate the checkpoint.

I am encountering a confusing issue at the moment regarding a restore of IDS10.
After running a physical restore, the logical restore is still asking for logs
prior to the level0 backup time.
Below are the details from the physical restore:
Please mount tape 1 on /database/archive/level0_prod and press Return to
continue ...
Archive Tape Information
Tape type: Archive Backup Tape
Online version: IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 10.00.FC8
Archive date: Thu Apr 15 05:30:02 2010
User id: informix
Terminal id: /dev/pts/1
Archive level: 0
Tape device: /backup_dump/db_level0/level0_prod
Tape blocksize (in k): 64
Tape size (in k): 150000000
Tape number in series: 1
Archive Information
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Copyright(C) 1986-2004 IBM Informix Software, Inc.
Initialization Time 09/11/2007 14:38:01
System Page Size 2048
Version 14
Archive CheckPoint Time 04/15/2010 05:30:02
Once the physical restore finished, I ran a logical restore.
ontape -l
Roll forward should start with log number 26019
Please mount tape 1 on /backup/db_logical/llogs_prod and press Return to
continue
The first log logical log AFTER the checkpoint time set at the start of the
level0 backup, should be 26054. The logical restore is asking for log 26019.
What I dont understand is that the online log states: -
14:37:12 Start Logical Recovery - Start Log 26019, End Log ?
14:37:12 Starting Log Position - 26054 0xab94018
So I dont understand why it needs to Start Logical Recovery at an older
log. Seems to recognize that the Log position is 26054.
Maybe I am missing something fundamental here. Can anybody offer any advice?
Thanks and regards,
Paul Ridding

It's OK, figured it out. It is asking for an old log number because there was an open transaction, spanning multiple logs, at the time of the backup. Thanks Paul
The reason why it need a log which is before the the level 0 archive is
that when
the level 0 started there were active transactions. The archive requires
the log
with begin work of these transaction which are active during the archive
checkpoint,
just incase these transaction need to be rolled back.
EXAMPLE
=========
Logical log #10
Begin work transaction 1
Insert row 1
insert row 2
Start logical log #11
insert row 3
checkpoint which starts archive
insert row 4
rollback transaction #1
The archive will require log #10 because when the archive started
transaction #1 was active.

The reason why it needs a log which is before the level 0 archive is that
when
the level 0 started there were active transactions. The archive requires
the logical log
with begin work for these open transaction which are active during the
archive checkpoint,
just incase these transaction need to be rolled back.
EXAMPLE
=========
Logical log #10
Begin work transaction 1
Insert row 1
insert row 2
Start logical log #11
insert row 3
checkpoint which starts archive
insert row 4
rollback transaction #1
The archive will require log #10 because when the archive started
transaction #1 was active.

When cleaned up after conversion from Base64, John said:
The reason why it needs a log which is before the level 0 archive is
that when the level 0 started there were active transactions. The
archive requires the logical log with begin work for these open
transaction which are active during the archive checkpoint, just in case
these transaction need to be rolled back.
EXAMPLE
=========
Logical log #10
Begin work transaction 1
Insert row 1
insert row 2
Start logical log #11
insert row 3
checkpoint which starts archive
insert row 4
rollback transaction #1
The archive will require log #10 because when the archive started
transaction #1 was active.
