You could store the archive tables in a different database server instance,
and leave synonyms in their place, which point to the new location.
As you are using OnBar, you could backup different dbspaces at different
times. I presume you are also backing up your logical logs. If you can
locate your archive data in a different dbspace, you can backup that
dbspace less frequently than your other dbspaces.
You can also use incremental archive levels, which will only backup data
that has changed since the previous backup. However, you will still need to
archive everything at regular intervals.
