I would like to have just the first row retrieved from a select statement. How can i do? (informix se 7.21) thank you

You would do that with:
SELECT FIRST 1 * from tablename;
HOWEVER, you cannot do that because the feature first appears, undocumented, in
7.24 and officially in 7.30. Your version is about 5 years out of date,
missing many features added in 7.24, 7.30, & 7.31 not to mention the whole 9.xx
OODBMS thingy and it is MUCH slower than current releases. Consider upgrading.

It's also almost certainly not Y2K compliant.
