This may be the result of Bug # 14829, which causes negative npused values after successive inserts/deletes in a table. The workaround is to calcultate the npused value manually and update the systables manually - if you run update statistics after this, it will be re-set to negative, however. This has caused us problems since it misleads the optimizer into sequential scans of possibly huge tables. I believe it has been fixed in version 5.02.UC1.
