ado and select statements

I am having a problem where a select statement in a cgi app, using an ado query dataset component (to a Informix database server) takes atleast a minute but the same query using the Borland Database engine takes 2 seconds. Has anyone else had this experience and know of a solution? The strange thing also is that updates and inserts are about the same speed for both BDE and ADO.
