Re: Moving of chunks..How to???

If a proper management product had been available this should of course have been a simple matter of installing the new disk, drag the chunk from the old disk to the new in a graphical user interface and continue working. With no GUI it should have been something like: onmove chunkname newdevicename. It isn't. That aside: The real way of doing it is possibly to do a backup of the entire OnLine instance and restore it after having removed the old disk and installed a new with the symbolic links set up appropriately. It might also be possible to do as follows: 1. Take OnLine offline. 2. Create a new device on a new disk with exactly the parameters of the device where the old chunk is now. 3. Use dd to copy from the old device to the new. 4. Rename the old symbolic link used for the old chunk to something not used. 5. Create a new symbolic link to the new device with the same name (and path of course) as the old symbolic link removed above. Of course if there where other things than this chunck located on the same device the procedure would be somewhat more complex but should still work. NB! I have *never* tested this. It may fail completely for some reason. You may crash your database and the whole machine. Anything may happen, and you do it on your own risk. I am quite shure Informix will not support the above procedure. Another issue: A chunck in rootdbs - this means that rootdbs consists of more than one chunk. In my book it should normally be only one small chunk, and all real data should be in separate dbspaces. If the chunk hadn't been in rootdbs you might have been able to back up only one dbspace and restore that to the new disk.
