Re: Personal performance benchmarks.

Based on our experiences with similar upgrades you will see no
performance enhancements at all for any SQL statements that currently
use the best indexes. I don't think Informix put any performance
enhancements into the basic engine (still C-ISAM based on Unix files
which is the whole idea of SE). They did however put in support for
update statistics medium and high and a corresponding optimiser thatuse this. We found we had to run a lot of update statistics commands
to even get back to the usual performance. However when we did we also
managed to get rid of some serious performance problems we had due to
the old (5.x) optimiser selection the wrong way to join to tables. In
this case we got several times the previous performance. We never
actually messured it, but I would guess on something like 20 to 100
times faster response times to simple interactive queries, and very
happy users.
You should also be aware that your 4GL compiled programs will increas
substantially in size so you may need more memory if users are
simultaneously running many different programs. Even a very tiny
program is easily 800kb or larger.
If you are currently running SCO 3.2.4.2 and have to upgrade to 5.0.2
that will also require some 8 to 16 Mb more memory than you now have
and perhaps 2 or 300Mb more diskspace just for the OS.
If you have performance problems I would upgrade to OnLine. That will
normally give you much better performance.
