IDS 9.21 vs 9.4 and 2Gb limit

Hello Guys,
someone out there who can answer this one ?
We have IDS 9.21 running (still 2Gb limit) and at least to upgrade to 9.4 for
a new application version.
Ok I know this can be done without export or unload of the DB.
And I need to use onmode -BC 1 to enable creation of new large chunks.
(-BC 2 to always use the extended capacity)
If we want to reorganise and use new large chunks now, I wonder if dbexport
will work (I cannot test it easily because it takes about 2 days to extract
all the data with "unload")
In 9.21 I couldn't use dbexport because of tables > 2 Gb.
(I had to unload in pieces, with select and then drop the table before
dbexport)
Will dbexport in 9.4 do the job on the same old dbspaces and chunks or am I
stuck with unload ?
Thx,
Best regards,
Jacques Lapeire
Hi Jacques
Perhaps after your upgrade and large chunk enablement, you could add
some new dbspaces with large chunks and then use fragmentation to move
your tables. You'd have to script it for speed depending on how many
tables you have, but this could lessen your overall downtime (only the
tables you are fragmenting (i.e. moving) would be unavailable for
duration of move).
You'd have to look up the fragmentation syntax but it is likely you
wouldn't really have to fragment the table in the traditional sense (by
round robin or expression), you'd just be using the fragmentation
initialization ability to move the table into the new space and let
informix do it all under the covers for you... No unload/load needed of
any kind.
Just a thought,

You could, as you imply, upgrade the engine in place to 9.40, dbexport
to files larger than 2GB if needed, then reimport into a cleanly build
pure 9.40 instance built with large chunks. No problem.
Another option would be to get my dbexport/dbimport replacement utility,
myexport, and use that to export directly from the 9.21 instance into
large files and reimport to 9.40 using either myimport (part of the same
package) or dbimport as myexport's output is fully compatible with
dbimport as long as you don't use the -m option to output indexes and
constraints to a separate schema file (in which case you'll have to run
that second SQL DDL script manually after the dbimport completes). If
you decide to get myexport, you will also need my dbschema replacement
utility, myschema, which is in the package utils2_ak (dbschema output is
not compatible with dbimport) and Jonathan Leffler's sqlcmd package
which it uses to export and import the data (myexport/myimport can also
optionally use the hploader by using Ravi Krishna's myonpload utility
but the hploader version in 9.21 can't handle large files either, sqlcmd
can). All of this is downloadable from the IIUG Software Repository and
myexport is also available from Oninit's web site.
