Logical logs backup to disk

Hello Guys, here's another one of which I'm in doubt for some time. Finally decided to post it. If backup of logical logs is written on disk, do you need to rename the existing file first before starting a new backup, or is there an "append" ? In other words, if you don't rename the file after the backup is written, are you overwriting the previous backup ? In this case you probably can't restore because some logfiles may be missing. Thx, Best regards, Jacques Lapeire
Hi,
I assume you talk about doing the log backup using
the backup utility "ontape" (as opposed to using
"onbar"), right?
When using "ontape", then indeed it will overwrite
the same disk file. There's no append to the file.
Therefore if you do not move the content of the file
to a safe place before you do the next log backup,
it will overwrite and you will have lost the earlier
backup of logs.
Regards,
Martin
