Installing on NT
Posted in 1999
User couldn't install Informix Online 7 on NT Server 4 SP3; installation failed creating the second dbspace and sysmaster database wasn't created properly, causing -908 IP connection errors in dbaccess. Responders advised avoiding underscores, spaces, and dashes in dbspace names, keeping names under 8 characters. User confirmed Mspace naming and prior experience with underscore/space restrictions.

Hi I hope somebody can shed some light upon this problem.
I am attempting to install online 7 on a HP netserver LC3 running NT
server version 4SP3 the install runs fine until it attempts to build the
second dbspace, it appears to create the rootdbs without problem and
then fails to create the second dbspace created by the install. After
install if i run an onstat - it tells me it is online and fine however
the online.log doesn't show the entry stating that the sysmaster
database was created correctly which I would expect. if I try and run
dbaccess I get a -908 error which is an ip connection error I have
checked out my ip and it is fine.
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

I seem to remember that there are some characters that 7.XX does not like
to have in the instance (and probably space) names. What are you calling the
second dbspace? Also, keep the name short (< 8 chars)

Hi i have found in previous install's that underscore's and spaces are definite
no no's and as you said anything over 8 char's. I am calling the space Mspace in
this install.

The second dbspace i automatically created by the Informix install program.
The install program build's the rootdbs then creates the sysmaster database
and then creates this second dbspace as far as i can see.

I haven't had a problem with underscores. However, dashes are a major
problem on NT systems.
