32/64 bit compatibility of Informix.

Can someone please clarify me the following points: 1)Whether a 32 bit Application on 32 bit Platform can communicate with 32 bit Informix on 64 bit platform? 2)Whether a 32 bit Application on 64 bit Platform can communicate with 32 bit Informix on 32 bit platform? It will be very if relevant links can be provided.I require this information urgently.
The answer to both is yes. If the connection is via strpip or tcpip the word-size difference between engine and client is irrelevant, the comms protocol hides any internal differences. There will ONLY be a problem connecting a 32bit client to a 64bit server on a 64bit machine or a 64bit client to a 32bit server on a 64bit machine using shared memory connections locally (you would have to use strpip or tcpip connections for these to work). Any connections between two machines is OK since share memory connections are not possible. Art S. If application and server are on the same machine you not only need to take care using strpip/tcpip connections but to use the correct shared libraries (e.g. setting SHLIB_PATH or LD_LIBRARY_PATH, ...). That means if you hava a 64bit server installed on your machine but your application is 32bit you will have to install a 32bit Connect or SDK on that machine, too. I concur with Andreas. I have a 64 bit Informix instance (9.4FC3 - Solaris 9) which is being accessed by a 32 bit client application using the 32 bit version (2.81) of ICONNECT. ICONNECT is installed in a separate $INFORMIXDIR - to eliminate any potential conflict.
