Hi Informix-Gurus, this is my first contribution in this newsgroup, which I feel as good. our applications are developed at present with Informix-4GL (4GL 7.20UD3) on the operating system SINIX-Z 5.42 (Siemens specific). now is an operating system change and transferred to Dynamic-4GL planned(D4GL 3.01.tc1, IDS2000 intel 9.21tc1). as new operating system I would favor Suse Linux 7,0, but my boss wants to absolutely transfer to NT. the question is now whether there are comparable applications or instruction under NT: a list generator, which can represent rectangles, hatchings and grey lines (so far DALLY of the soft print GmbH) printer pool, where form length, form width, character width, line space, adjustment, section printout is possible (so far xpadd Spool of Siemens files to other email recipients send (so far mailx) as I can convince mine boss that Linux would be the better version. sorry for my bad english. Thanxs Best regards Markus (Markus.Dahms@bfd-r.bayern.de)

Besides any technical issues: Linux IS sort of UNIX. So if you migrate to Linux, you can recycle all of your Unix skills. If you don't know NT (WIN 95 knowledge is not sufficient for an NT admin) you have to learn a lot of new stuff ... with all the newbie issues, mistakes and time consequences. This might help in negotiating with those who spend the money. HTH Christian -- The opinions stated above are my own and not necessarily those of my employer.
Hi, onmonitor should be no reason to choose Linux instead of WinNT or Win2000, because onmonitor will be abolished for Unix/Linux in forthcoming Informix versions, too. The Web-based Server Administrator Tool should be used instead. But, concerning your intended migration to D4GL: Do you have some/a lot of system calls in your 4GL code? If no, and if you are familiar with WinnNT/Win2K, no problem. If yes, choose Linux!!! If you migrate from Unix to WinNT/Win2K you have to redesign all of these!!! Command Language of Win2K is powerfull, no comparison to old DOS times. But it differs from Unix C or K shell very much. Note: If a specific command is missing on WinNT/Win2K, use GNU ports of Unix command, there's a lot of these on theWeb. Compatibility differs very much, but is pretty good for some of the new ports. Always be aware of the migration costs in time (and money). BTW, D4GL on WinNT has only GUI mode, no 4GL-Like alphanumeric mode. OnlyD4GL on Unix/Linux has it (may be helpful when migrating frm 4GL).
