Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.

Consider an RSS setup with a primary and one RSS. Suppose I want to take both
the primary and the RSS offline to do a little sork. Then, I want to bring
them both back online without losing replication. (That is, without having to
re-initialize replication.)
Does it matter which server is taken down first? Does it matter which is
brought back online first?
Thank you.
DG
David,
You should be ok taking either one offline to do non-database work.
Before taking them down run onmode -c norm on the primary to force the
checkpoint so they are in sync. Also check onstat -g rss verbose on the
primary to make sure the RSS server is not way behind.
Look for the line:
Approximate Log Page Backlog:3
If you are shutting down the primary use onmode -ucky.
For the RSS onmode -ky is good.
To start the primary oninit -vy same for the RSS.
Once they come back online the primary will send over the logs needed to bring
the RSS server up to date. onstat -g rss verbose to monitor.
You DO NOT want to leave the RSS server down so long that the primary server
overwrites the logical logs. If that happens you will have to bring the RSS
server up and restore the logical logs from the primary before replication
will continue.
Thanks

Thank you, so much.
I intend to have both primary and RSS down at the same time. I presume that it
doesn't matter which goes down first, right?
Then, I want to bring them back up at the same time. Again, does it matter
which is brought back up first?
It's not a disaster to have to reinitialize replication, but it is a slight
pain, and takes several hours. So, I'd like to avoid breaking it, if I can.
Thank you.
DG
You can take the servers down and back up in any order you need to UNLESS you
have DRAUTO is set to 2. In that case you have to take the secondary down
first and bring the primary up first. Otherwise the secondary will upgrade
itself to primary mode.
