Imported Restore w/o Tapes
Posted in 2011
Dan asked how to archive one IDS 11.50 instance and restore it into another without using backup media, including across machines. Art suggested piping ontape through rsh: `ontape -s -L 0 -t STDIO | rsh remote_machine ontape -r -t STDIO`. Paul added compression for large volumes: `ontape -s -L 0 -t STDIO | gzip | rsh remote_machine zcat | ontape -r -t STDIO`, noting the exact syntax is in the manual. Since Dan's real goal was seeding a ~1TB HDR/RSS secondary in another city without shipping drives, Art pointed him at the ifxclone utility. No follow-up on the outcome is recorded.

Good Morning, IDS 11.50.FC8 O/S AIX 5.3 I think I remember Art talking one time about how to do an archive from one instance and restoring to another w/o back media. Would it be possible to get that little trick? Also, could this be used for cross machine restores? Thanx, Dan
IB that would be something very like:
ontape -s -L 0 -t STDIO | rsh remote_machine ontape -r -t STDIO

If you are moving a lot of data then add a gzip and zcat in there

I am moving just under 1 Tb of data. What would that look like w/gzip & zcat? Perhaps this would be a good time to explain the motive behind the madness. I have this 1 Tb system in Indiana that I need to restore to a machine in Atlanta. I have already done this via external drives being sent down there but I am going to have to eventually set up either HDR or RSS between these 2 systems in order to be able to support a move between the sites w/o major downtime.Ie... once they are in sync, I can mmake the Atlanta system the primary. I was trying to eliminate the ship time for the media. With all that being said, does anyone have a better ider? thanx, dan
Something like
ontape -s -L 0 -t STDIO | gzip | rsh remote_machine zcat | ontape -r -tSTDIO
Of course you could look in the manual - the exact command is there
Cheers
Paul
