I wouldn't call that going through the roof. They would probably not even cause a ripple in the performance. Put a mail server on one of the NT boxes and watch the same performance the news article posted and we'll see a big dump. And you may ask, "Why would I want a mail daemon running?" We all know how convenient and easy it is to set up mailx/mail messages in shell scripts for notification on critical events while the server is running. True, NT has messaging. But it just ain't UNIX. Geez, imagine putting an Exchange server on an NT box just to get mail working. Does exchange have command-line messaging for shell scripts? :-) (I know, I know, there are simpler mail pkgs for NT, and a mailx--but now we're unixizing NT, so why not just use UNIX? yeah yeah, Post.Office I know...) And this clustering thing for NT. What is it? It certainly doesn't speak to the original intent of NT. The only appropriate analogy I can think of is putting 747 engines on a Cessna. See, look we got it to fly, and look at the performance. The wings are practically ripping off, but baby look at her go! > PS.: I am *not* an NT enthusiast in any way, but we should keep things > in perspective. The Unix community do have their problems as well. > Well, I <was> an NT enthusiast until I heard the sorry news about the latest security holes in MS products, and the direction NT 5.0 will be taking. I can't take anything serious about Microsoft anymore. They remind me of Commodore, lots of activity, lots of toys, nothing really heavy duty. Where are they now... I'm asking myself when will be a good time to remove NT and put Solaris in. Not to sound like a salesman for Netscape, but a quick browse of their latest offerings shows much promise for an open-system approach that WILL NOT have to include Xwindows, Microsoft, Novell and Apple. Of these we've seen enough abuse of the end-user and vendor stupidity. Oh yeah, I forgot, I can use Corel-Office-for-Java for the wp and spread sheet. :-) Tim Schaefer tschaefe@mindspring.com www.mindspring.com/~tschaefe > Nils.Myklebust@idg.no > NM Data AS, P.O.Box 9090 Gronland, N-0133 Oslo, Norway > My opinions are those of my company > The Informix FAQ is at http://www.iiug.org
