Can anybody suggest a good strategy for putting tables back into lesser
extents other than unload/load. We are currently using alter fragment on
table init in dbspace, but it doesnt always give desired results.

I'd say ALTER TABLE is the safest and most flexible, although it can be a
problem with detached indexes. What problems are you getting?
