Re: IDS Next Version - features wanted.

k, one thing at a time - your post seemed to imply that IDS could not access from remote IDS instances and that federation would be the feature to implement in order to achieve this: this is not the case, and V7 can do 2PC across instances (or just databases) as it is, while DB2 requires federation to achieve this - Yes I was referring to Informix Enterprise Gateway - XPS has external tables, which essentially is a mechanism to access to files of various descriptions. the syntax allows to fragment external tables across multiple streams, etc: look at it as HPL, the XPS way. The feature is in fact more flexible than HPL, in that is purely based on SQL - VTI/VII: as Jean Sagi said, the down side is that you have to write the access methods yourself (I would have thought this to be an advantage?! as in, the engine doesn't do what you want, so go and write it yourself, and you have no excuse to complain about open source/licensing issues, $$$, and hey! you could even make a few $$$ yourself?!) - however the feature is rather powerful: eg you could write an access method that lets you see a process as a table, through say some IPC. then use insert triggers to notify the process of database activity, and select from the virtual table to get responses from the process. you could even use select triggers to (say) monitor who's done IPC with that particular process, and when.... of course you could just write a UDR to achieve most of that, but the above is more elegant and flexible. manuals here http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/ids9help/index.jsp (under Developing/Developing extensions to IDS) or here http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/informix/pubs/library/list5.html#V an example of a flat file access method here http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/db2/zones/informix/library/demo/ids_ffvti.html gsturkenboom@lic.co.nz wrote: > You're right.
