Besides being a rather well worn stock answer by Informix technical support,
it is not always possible to just upgrade at a whim. Anyway if Informix/IBM
wrote their code properly there wouldn't be silly 4Gb restrictions on
Solaris
The problem is a poor config, just upgrading would not help.

Um, no! It is not possible on Solaris for a 32-bit application to connect
to more than 4GB of shared memory at the same time (actually the REAL limit
is 3.6GB on Solaris - I have a test app if anyone's interested in their own
system limits). The only thing that IDS could do would be to detach
segments so that it can attach addition segments. That kind of segment
swapping is not efficient and does not lend itself to good code.
The point is that a 64-bit version of IDS is needed, not that an upgrade to
IDS 10.00 is needed. All versions of IDS are capable of using the full
amount of shared memory that Solaris will allow.
The suggestion to upgrade to 10.00 - while one is at going to 64-bit - is
not a bad one, though. IDS 10.00 is a bit faster than 9.40, which itself is
about 5-15% faster than earlier releases, has lots of useful new features,
and seems to be stable.

"This is the onstat -p output
"IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 9.30.FC6X1...- 15475712 Kbytes "
Max HAS a FC (64-bit version) and 15Gb (that's 15Gb)
of shared memory in use.
So I'm guess the virtual portion is more than 10Gb.
So a >4Gb initial virtual segment would help!
