But I doubt they will kill off NewEra for a long time. I still think it's a viable tools for many types of projects. The problem is there aren't that many other tools that can handle both a gui and true application partitioning without costing an arm and a leg and often then some (like Forte and other similar tools). Right now Java is behind as there are no mature tools. However the whole concept surronding Java seems to me to be better than anything the computer industry has seen so far. If Sun and the other players can pull it off (and there is every reason by now to believe they can) Java is in our future. If you haven't read up extensively on Java yet, now is the time to start. For tools Symantec seems to be the leader, while the newly annouced JWorks tools from Informix may become interesting. (They will have to do away with the awfully ugly grotesq wif files of NewEra if they mean bussines.) The class libraries Informix will come out with are also very interesting in conjunction with their Universel Server. With Java inside the database (as a form of stored procedures), on the database server (outside the database), on any number of application servers and on the client we can finally manage to program in only one language for all purposes. If there are any character terminal afficionados still roming arround out there, Java is also the final terminating thing for these old workhorses (the terminals - not the afficionados :-) with its ability to run as a reasonably thin client with lots of server code instead if you want. :Any comments? :Jens Nils.Myklebust@idg.no NM Data AS, P.O.Box 9090 Gronland, N-0133 Oslo, Norway My opinions are those of my company The Informix FAQ is at http://www.iiug.org
