Hi We currently have a customer with a duel CPU machine running ay 166 MHz. The CPU's are currently CPU bound as the usage is regularly above 85%. They have two options to upgrade. The options are Old = 2 * 166 1. 4 * 166 2. 2 * 332 The question I have is what will informix work best with. We have advised that they should test but at the moment they would like a rough answer. Anyone have any comments? The system is running on AIX and is IDS 7.24.UC6 Thanks in advance Stuart Worrall e-mail: stuart@NO-SPAMlintel.co.uk

According to Informix multithreaded architecture, as more CPU's you have, as faster your box is running. > > The question I have is what will informix work best with. Probably, both configurations has good performance, but someone is cheaper. ------------------------------------------------- With best regards, Yuri Dovgart SAP R/3, Informix technical consultant, Informix Certified Professional, Senior System Consultant System Architecture and High Availability Systems, 'Telecominvest' company Email y_dovgart@tci.ukrtel.net ICQ 39284285

This depends on your applications and the nature of your queries. Faster CPUs mean that each thread will complete its task faster so simple queries will complete more quickly as will individual queries when there are multiple users. However, more CPUs means that more parallelism is possible meaning that more complex queries that can take advantage of IDS's parallel capabilities will complete faster and multiple users will overall FEEL that the machine is faster because fewer jobs will wait. So I'm going to join the one who recommended that you either test or get the best of both worlds and bite the bullet and buy 4 * 332MHZ CPUs. Art S. Kagel
