RE: Resident Memory larger then expected
Posted in 2009
Correction: I wanted to say: Accordingly SHMTOTAL is set ...
I have a machine with only 4 GB of memory and I want to run two instances of
IDS. It' s a Datawarehouse test installation. And I have to use HPL to load
rather large tables.
So I limited the kernelparamter for shared memory that is granted to one
"project" to 1 GB (a quarter of total memory is default anyway). Accordingly
SHMMAX is set to 1GB. I did all this because I had issues to start HPL on
that machine with memory errors.
BTW: I found in the fine manual that one lock takes about 100 to 200 Byte of
shared memory and that it is placed initially in the resident portion and
when added dynamically in the virtual portion.
Thanks all for your help.
Reinhard.

I haven't yet overrun SHMTOTAL on an 11.50 instance since I always set
SHMTOTAL to zero (unlimited) now, but in the past, if the engine wanted more
virtual memory and SHMTOTAL was exhausted, the instance shutdown or hung. I
know that there was an old feature request for the instance to just keep
going but error out whatever operation required the additional memory, but I
don't know if that was ever implemented. The last time I hit the limit was
in an early 7.31 instance.

Hello Superboer,
good hint! I changed LOCKS from 4,000,000 to 10,000 and now only 49152 KB
for the resident portion were allocated. What happens if the server
allocates more locks in 1,000,000 portions as I have seen before and memory
is limited to e.g. 1024000 KB (SHMTOTAL)?

Reinhard.
