7.30. To be or not to be ?

We have recently migrated from version 5.0 to 7.30 uc2 (HP 10.20 and AIX 4.3.3). Since then, the engine started to crash, the performance is bad and some weird situations are happening as a result of the update statistics. I know that there are a lot of rumors that the 7.30 version is not quite good. My question is: Is there any reason for me to justify a new migration for a newer version ? If there is, which version would you, "Informix Gurus", recommend and why? Thanks, Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Before you buy.
We are using 7.30 on a Sun platform and it's fine. The previous version was 7.24 which did crash from time to time. Of course I don't know about the AIX factor.... Did I reply to this, dont recall, here's some fun stuff to consider, our revision numbers were different, but the principle applies: Watch the o/s. watch it carefully.... 1) fir goodness sake cap'n, head off and check the /etc/inetd.conf and see that the telnetd doesnt have the -a parameter. 2) AIX loves to allocate memory for cache. There is no need for this. Do your users sit in thier apps? cool, reduce the cache, informix makes better use of it anyways. 3) What are the crashes? havent' walked into the shared memory segment limit have you? we did with the 7.31 release, not pretty 4) AIX and the synclvdom... just dont do it. AIX lv manager uses the first 5k of a raw disk for 'volume' information. So, set an offset in informix. Informix 1) Performance... Buffers, lots of them, never enough 2) LRU and CLEANERS, max em 3) Memory, :) You know what unix apps like watch the size of your segments though, you dont want to run out of segments, since informix grabs 4 on startup leaving the engine another 7 before it dies. Make the segments large if neccessary. 4) Upgrade from 5? Yea, watch your queries. Esp how you deal with dates. These things are not character fields. (tell that to our legacy apps) In general we had about 6 months to work on the production machine prior to users, but under load we walked into: telnetd -a race bug AIX filesystem cache random coredumps from a non-standard printer Loads of 'where is this damn file' confusion. brett In article <39bceb5a.15224211@comino-leeds>, sally.woolrich@comino.com says... > > We are using 7.30 on a Sun platform and it's fine.
