They came out with a data base that was/is over priced and no tools, alienated their customers, and now are playing catch-up, having to compete against even Microsloth, who took one of their older versions and converted it into SQLServer. They are hanging on with some other lite products but scary to buy into. Oracle isn't multithreaded, so it doesn't even compare with Informix, which uses the concepts of threading and shared memory as core concepts. Oracle is just into bigness and old technology. Oracle put a pretty face on a beast, but you couldn't give me five reasons why I should buy Oracle. It's a pig. Sure it uses raw devices and shared memory, but no threading, no concept of virtual processors. Informix, well there's more than 10 reasons but here's my 10: Best data base engine on the market - good on many different platforms Relatively easy to manage - minimum training required Good mix of tools - tools are increasing Has a 4GL - worse case this tool is still widely available if you can't have a GUI Works good with UNIX - been around a long time Company focus is on being the best not just saying they are - they have good talent Future aware - universal server is way out front in the future concepts arena Daily use for end-users and technical workers allows many optional paths Architectural design is light years ahead of Oracle and Sybase Talent pool of people to work on it are usually smarter than Oracle people Of course I'm slightly dependant on the product, but what's the difference, it's still the best.
