This does work, we are using the "application server" approach without problems. On the database server, you need Informix-STAR (if you are running Online < 6.0) or Informix-NET (for SE < 6.0). The engines from version 6.0 on have networking built in. On the application server, you need Informix-NET for versions of 4GL < 6.0. I am not sure what you need for 4GL 6.x, we are still using 4.10 working against an Online 5.07 server.
