Writes to the console log everytime someone connects or disconnects, writes to the message log when a logical log is changed or backed up or a checkpoint started or completed, or an archive started or completed. Updating of the files in /INFORMIXTMP, IO with the named pipes stored there to support streams connections, updating the ONCONFIG file if auto logs are added, several other minor, COOKED file, IO chores. The thing is that many of them are volume dependent. The busier the system the more of these operations there are. So there can definitely be an impact on overall server performance if these are backed up. Art S. Kagel
