But why do people > like Informix NewEra that much ?? Well, there's a lot of horses for courses here, but some of the things *I* like or have grown to like are: 1. Syntax like Informix-4GL (so I don't have worry about where I put full stops or semi-colons, etc.) 2. As easy to put together an app as any of the others. 3. It's a language, so you can code everything just using an editor or develop your own tools if you don't like what they give you. 4. Proper three-tier client/server, not restricted to any particular platform. 5. Nifty language features like code re-use and customisation with HANDLERs. 6. Generates less network traffic than VB (and possibly others as well.) 7. Built-in version control, basic support for team development. 8. Some nice class libraries bundled. 9. We committed to it heavily and we've gotten good results. 10. I'm just inherently an Informix bigot. 11. Er, ... 12. That's it. There are some gripes, too: 1. I'm sure someone will complain that it's not as OO as Smalltalk. 2. It's not well marketed (and that's a real problem when you're trying to "sell" it to management or whoever) 3. Depending on what level you're pushing it at, it could be expensive. In its declared target market, it's not expensive. 4. Requires more work up front than Delphi or VB to look as nice. 5. OLE 1 support only at this stage. 6. Hell of a learning curve to move from procedural/event-driven to proper OO (but that applies to all of them) Overall, I'm happy with it, the "gripes" are not important to me (or my clients)...
