IDS 9.4 on XP Pro
Posted in 2006
A user installing IDS 9.4 on Windows XP Pro saw the "server is being initialized" message hang for over 30 minutes. Suggestions: check onstat -/-m output and whether the IDS service is running, read the online.log (large chunk allocation can simply take a long time), and check the registry, since a blank IXUSERS Group "Name" value under HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Informix\\OnLine\\<instance>\\Security can break startup (set it to "*"). Others noted failed installs can leave zero-length dbspace/sbspace files that you can create manually with onspaces, and that such install bugs on XP were mostly pre-9.40 or fixed by 9.40.TC3. The poster never reported back, so no confirmed resolution.

Hello, I "finally" got around to downloading the 9.4 package for IDS for windows to play around with it on my laptop (OS XP-Pro). Has anybody had any problems doing this? The message I'm getting now is "Your IBM Informix Dynamic Server is being initialized..". This message has been displayed for at least 30 minutes now. Is there any tricks to get a simple database running on a pc? Pete
Hi,
Can you open up an Informix Dynamic Server 9.40 command window from the Start
menu and run:
onstat -
onstat -m
and paste the output, to see what it thinks it's doing?
Also see if the IDS service is running in Control Panel->Administrative
Tools->Services.
Regards
Guy

Relax. Yahoo! Mail virus scanning helps detect nasty viruses!
Hi, Depending on the size of the chunks you have chosen, this might take a long while, cause informix will reserve space. You should take a look in the online.log, this gives you some hints about what is happening. Hi Pete, Last year I have a similar problem. After days and days of investigating I found that installation did not write all information to registry. This value was wrong: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\\\SOFTWARE\\\\Informix\\\\OnLine\\\\<yours instance name>Security\\\\IXUSERS Group] "Name"="" i.e. ixusers group was not defined. I changed that to: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\\\SOFTWARE\\\\Informix\\\\OnLine\\\\<yours instance name>\\\\Security\\\\IXUSERS Group] "Name"="*" i.e. all user groups belong to ixusers group. Also I recommend this excellent article on Informix/Windows issue http://groups.google.com/group/comp.databases.informix/browse_thread/thread/ 8ebe94e744bb32ff/c41ecf83c64da6c6?lnk=st&q=ixusers+zorko&rnum=1&hl=hr#c41ecf 83c64da6c6 BR Hrvoje Zokovic -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of PETE DICKSON Sent: Wednesday, February 15, 2006 12:48 PM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: IDS 9.4 on XP Pro [6397] Hello, I "finally" got around to downloading the 9.4 package for IDS for windows to play around with it on my laptop (OS XP-Pro). I used 9.4 (the distribution from the IIUG download site) on a Windows XP
laptop for a while, it worked really fine, except when hibernating /
standy'ing the computer, I needed to relaunch it.
I had a similar pb with 9.3 on XP, where I actually broke the install and
created all the spaces by hand.
Here is an abstract of a document I wrote on that:

Thus the database engine is running, as the automatic installation process
failed, there is no other DbSpace than the rootdbs. If you go to
"C:\\\\IFMXDATA\\\\ol_popeye", you will see that the files are there but nothing
is initialized.

There were some known problems on XP with IDS versions before 9.40, in
including not creating the dbspaces, for example:
161355 SERVER INSTALL ON A FRESH XP MACHINE REPORTS THAT THE SERVER WAS NOT
INITIALIZED SUCCESSFULLY
In the first few versions of 9.40 there was also similar problems when
installing via Remote Desktop/Terminal Server but these were all resolved by
around TC3.
