Thanks for your comments. My comments and questions on your comments are:
[1] I don't have experience with dbexport. (My version of ISQL/4GL is
*old*. dbexport and dbimport became available in v. 4.00.) From the
manuals I have, it is not clear how to make dbexport output in fixed
columns. That format is easiest to work with in SQL*Loader.
If dbexport outputs in variable length columns with delimiters, then you
need to use EXTERNAL datatypes in SQL*Loader, with delimiter-specs. I
found it a *lot* easier to work with fixed field (POSITION) input.
One thing I did not make clear in my post: Our Informix and Oracle tables
did not map 1-for-1, so part of the work of the Informix report program was
to do the conversion to the Oracle table structure.
[2] Agreed.
[3] For a one-time conversion, this is probably more work than it is worth.
For on-going transfers, this is the way to go, since it can reduce or
eliminate the need for manual handling of transfer files, etc.
