I finally discovered that it's a good idea to set the INFORMIXSERVER variable to the name of a dbspace! There were two problems - I needed to specify the correct protocol for connection in my SQLHOSTS file. The second problem - Informix might want to think about implementing a little more helpful error messages, but I managed to stumble through and get it right.
