DBD::Informix -- Error Installing On Mac OSX
Posted in 2008
A user couldn't build DBD::Informix 2008.0513 via CPAN on Mac OS X (Leopard, Intel), and assumed Makefile.PL's platform detection was buggy. Replies, including from module maintainer Jonathan Leffler, identified the real cause: Apple's bundled Perl is 32-bit while the Informix ESQL/C (CSDK) on Mac was 64-bit, so the build correctly refuses to mix them. Suggested fixes: build your own 64-bit Perl 5.10 (e.g. CC='cc -m64', installed outside system paths) plus DBI and other modules, or wait for a 32-bit CSDK for Mac OS X. The poster chose to wait, so no build was confirmed.

Hi,
I cannot get DBD::Informix to install on Mac OSX on my Macbook Pro or on my Mac Mini.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

There's a new CPAN.pm version (v1.9205) available!
[Current version is v1.7602]
You might want to try
install Bundle::CPAN
reload cpan
without quitting the current session. It should be a seamless upgrade
while we are running...

If it's broken I have no real idea what went wrong, or how to fix it. Mac OSX is not like Linux--well it's kinda like Linux, but more like an animal all to itself. There are several open sores projects out there that shoehorn Linux and X-windows stuff on to Mac OSX but this is way beyond my skillset. And besides, I don't want to go there, it's not as easy as you think. They did a darn good job of making sure you really don't want to go there. DBD::Informix installed fine on my Linux workstation, and on my Linux VM on my Macbook Pro. This is a bug in the Perl code ( Makefile.PL ) that determines what the OS is, and whether it's 32bit or 64bit. I tried commenting out the code, yes, I found where the bug is, but commenting and hacking only made it worse. It's the kind of Perl that is hard to tell the beginning of the program from the ending, so it's way out of my league. If you need to hear from me, communicate on the channels where I listen reliably. I do try to get to read the IIUG channels - it was bad luck that you asked while I was moving house and without internet connections. The better forum for DBD::Informix questions is generally dbi-users@perl.org. Download Perl 5.10.0 from www.perl.com or any other appropriate source. Compile with the Apple version of GCC - you could set the C compiler to 'cc -m64' to ensure that Perl is built as a 64-bit system. You'll also need to reinstall DBI - and any other modules that you need. And don't install it in the system locations. (I keep my copy under $HOME/perl/ -- but since I have a 32-bit PPC Mac, I don't get to play with CSDK or IDS on it.) Or you will have to wait until a 32-bit version of CSDK is available on MacOS X. That might not be as long as you might fear. -- Jonathan Leffler #include <disclaimer.h> Email: jleffler@earthlink.net, jleffler@us.ibm.com Guardian of DBD::Informix v2008.0513 -- http://dbi.perl.org/ "Blessed are we who can laugh at ourselves, for we shall never cease to be amused."
