Long transactions & Informix O

Hi there, A few weeks ago, there was a considerable amount of net traffic discussing the behaviour of Oneline when a long transaction enters the last logical log and is terminated. To recap: problems occur when the transaction is so large that the rollback information completely fills the remaining space in the last log. Eventualy Online aborts. When attempts are made to restart it, it enters recovery mode indefintely ( I once left it like this for 16 hrs ). As far as I can see the general consensus of opinion was that the only way to proceed from this point was to re-initalise and restore from an archive. Incidentally when you do this I think that you may lose the transaction that are in you logical logs because if you try and roll forward exactly the same situation will occur, I may be wrong but I seem to remember this happening to me. However you don't have to resort to the archive tapes ! Even though Online is stuck in recovery mode you can still backup the logical logs. (I actually did this be running tbmonitor from another terminal but I am sure you can do it from the command line.) As soon as the logs become free the whole system comes back to life. A lot less painfull then re-initializing. To avoid getting into this situation we have a very simple shell script which runs 'tbtape -c ' in the background and mails its output to a specified user. If anybody is interested I can email them a copy of this. ?
