A lot less painfull then re-initializing. Great ! Are the saved logs any use (if the last one's busted) or would you just do a level 0 archive anyway and then discard the logs ? If the latter, presumably you could just back the logs up to /dev/null ? Is the DB in the state at the last COMMIT WORK, or are there any other possible problems ? Does the method rely on the last txn not being in the first log (so the log's completely free when backed up) ? > To avoid getting into this situation we have a very simple shell > script which runs 'tbtape -c ' in the background and mails its > output to a specified user. I tried stuff like this and couldn't get it to work - my OnLine manual says % Tbtape requires a dedicated terminal or window (virtual terminal): % it cannot be run in the background (if job control is available) % as it may need to get input from a terminal. I ended up with stopped & killed jobs, when we tried to cron the backup stuff. Have you gotten round it (with something like the pty 'screen' program) or have I simply misunderstood you ? Anyhow, I'd love to see it working: if it's a small script, could you just post it ? In the end we used 'tbstat -l' and friends, with a bit of awking, to mail info on the free logs, free pages and state of the (proprietary) daemon processes that update the database. That doesn't stop the thing breaking, necessarily, but at least means I can start repairs 10 mins before the managers notice it's busted 8^) > Regards Ken > > +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ > | Ken Woghiren (DBA - Charles Taylor & Co Ltd) | > | | > | Email: kenw@cix.compulink.co.uk | > | Snail: World Trade Centre, London E1 9UN ,ENGLAND | > | Voice: + 44 71 522 7466 | > +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ Many thanks for the info. -- Cheers - Tony. ____________________________________________________________________________ Tony Heskett: theskett@lhr-sys.ssf-sys.dhl.com | Vox: (+44) 81 747 8330 DHL Systems : Kings House, Great West Road, TW8 9HS | Fax: (+44) 81 747 0875
