Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
User sought guidance on creating custom Informix instances on Windows without using the installer's built-in instance creation tool. Hrvoje Zokovic provided a comprehensive solution: create INFORMIXSQLHOSTS and ONCONFIG files, prepare chunk files, create necessary Windows registry keys under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Informix, create a Windows service using SC.EXE, and initialize with starts.exe.

Hi,
as many among us, I am not very much experienced with Informix on Windows, and
the doc doesn't help a lot here
This is about windows, Linux/Unix not concerned here. I will understand if you
don't read further and switch to the next post :-)
I am writing a tool that generates an onconfig file, creates the chunks files
etc, then finally initializes the instance with oninit -ivy. It is now
operational on any unix flavor, but far from working on windows because
everything is so different.
I don't want to use the 'create an instance' option of the IFMX install
script, just because ( and I wanna see if this is really possible to create
from scratch without using this functionality.
There seems to be some 'magic' around the instance initialization process
(oninit -ivy on unix), because of a number of reasons such as windows want a
service, instance must be declared in registry etc...
I have seen that setnet32 can be done in a silent way by loading a config
file(but the file structure is not described anywhere apparently).
I have seen that the instance manager (instmgr.exe) can create an instance but
it has to be on an interactive way, although a few parameters can be passed
from command line, but also nothing about this in the doc
Did anyone do anything similar and has some tricks(or relevant and complete
doc) for me to proceed ?
Thanks
And no, I am not a windows fan :-)
Eric
Starting 12.10 you can use INFORMIXSQLHOSTS environment variable on windows too
e.g.
INFORMIXSQLHOSTS=C:\\\\INFORMIX\\\\ETC\\\\SQLHOSTS.OL_SERVERRegards
Hrvoje
Basically you have to:
- (optionally) add service to C:\\\\Windows\\\\System32\\\\drivers\\\\etc
- create INFORMIXSQLHOSTS file (e.g. C:\\\\Informix\\\\etc\\\\ONCONFIG.ol_eric)
- prepare files for dbspaces (chunks)
- create ONCONFIG file
- (optionally) create cmd file e.g. C:\\\\Informix\\\\ol_eric.cmd
- create registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\\\SOFTWARE\\\\Informix\\\\OnLine\\\\ol_eric and
all subkeys
- create registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\\\SOFTWARE\\\\Informix\\\\SQLHOSTS\\\\ol_eric
and all subkeys
- create service for ol_eric using SC.EXE command
- initialize server (just for the first time ofc) with
%INFORMIXDIR%\\\\bin\\\\starts.exe ol_eric -iy
This is roughly all :)
I can send you sample reg files if you want.

PS this is all assuming that you already installed Informix and that you are
using 64 bit Informix (on 64 bit windows ofc)
