Questions for a Beginning User/Developer of Informix Databases

Please accept my apologies for what may appear to be some simple questions. I am working on a project that will be developing C++ code to access an Informix database through ODBC. The project has 3 engineers on it and I am the only person who has written code ( Java to access an Access database). My experience with Informix is just about none. The development is being done on a Solaris system. Right now I am getting an error in the SQLConnect call with the result of IM003 and the error message of driver specified by data source cannot be loaded. 1. There is mention in the documentation to start up the ODBC administrator. Unfortunately I am not sure where to go to do it and how and the documentation does not tell me how to do it. Can someone enlighten me on the process. 2. I found the .odbc.ini file. In it there are several data sources. With each data source there are a number of fields. Can some explain what each field means and what should be in it. Driver Description - does this matter ? Database Hostname Loginid - used in sqlconnect call I assume Pwd - used in sqlconnect call I assume Service - Protocol - Server Name - 3. How does one determine the name of the database and version that is installed. Someone told me a few weeks ago, but I cannot remember what it is. I do know it is version 7.xx. 4. Is there well written sample good. The example by Informix is terrible. It is the 1st C program that I actually saw a goto statement. 5. Is there a good book on ODBC development that is not necessarily geared toward one OS. Thanks, Andrew McHorney
