Using ontape to disk *is* now supported. With that comes the responsibility
to satisfy the program's needs, such as never ever running into the TAPESIZ
limit (or the ontape program will ask for another tape), handling the input
and output requirements, and ensuring that the copy of the archive is
physically
protected in the event of machine failure (the purpose of going to tape in
the first place.)
Onarchive is also supported, but certainly not recommended. It is very
complex to configure and implement, though there are things that it can do
that ontape cannot easily do.
In version 7.3 Informix announced the Informix Storage Manager (ISM.) It
is a pared-down version of Legato's product that works with onbar, and comes
included with the engine. It contains documented, built-in, fully supported
mechanisms for archiving to disk or to tape.
There are many scripts for archiving to disk at the web site of the
International Informix Users Group http://www.iiug.org .
