Initialization-Error
Posted in 2000
A user creating a test Informix 7.30 instance on an HP715 with a cooked file chunk got "Cannot open chunk ... errno = 2", an assert "chunk failed sanity check" (rspartn.c), and rootdbs taken offline on startup. Doug Agnew explained the first two pages of rootdbs couldn't be read because the instance had never been initialized, and advised running 'oninit -i'; that fixed it. Follow-up discussion debated where to place cooked chunk files — Art Kagel warned against putting them in /dev, suggesting a directory under INFORMIXDIR, while David Williams preferred a separate application directory; symlinks were suggested as a compromise.

I'm trying to initialize an Informix 7.30 UC6 instance for testing on an
HP715 workstation (128 MB RAM):
Therefore I've created a cooked device (dd if.... bs... count...
of=rootdbs), set the ownership and rights to informix:informix resp. 660
and configured all the rest (as it is realised on our HP9000/800 K360/4
except some kernel parameters adjusted to the smaller platform I wish to
install IDS).
Whenever I type in an "oninit" the systems returns the error message
"Cannot open chunk ..... errno = 2" and the online.log tells me:
17:41:00 Event alarms enabled. ALARMPROG =
'/home/informix/etc/log_full.sh'
17:41:06 DR: DRAUTO is 0 (Off)
17:41:07 Informix Dynamic Server Version 7.30.UC6 Software SerialNumber XXX#123456
17:41:07 Assert Failed: chunk failed sanity check
17:41:07 Informix Dynamic Server Version 7.30.UC6
17:41:07 Who: Session(1, user@host, 0, 0)
Thread(7, main_loop(), 0, 1)
File: rspartn.c Line: 6882
17:41:07 Results: Chunk 1 is being taken OFFLINE.
17:41:07 Action: Restore chunk from archive.
17:41:09 See Also: /usr1/informix/tmp/af.75612
17:41:09 I/O error, Primary Chunk '/dev/rootdbs' -- Offline (sanity)
17:41:10 Informix Dynamic Server Stopped.
17:41:10 mt_shm_remove: WARNING: may not have removed all/correctsegments
How can I get the rootdbs online ?!? Has anybody (I'm sure there is) the
slightest idea what to do in such a case?
thanx for help

Thomas,
I think you need to use 'oninit -i' to INITALIZE the engine. The sanity
check occurs because the first two pages of the rootdbs cannot be read by
the engine.

BTW: It is a bad idea to create cooked filesystem files in /dev. I STRONGLY
suggest that you create a directory under the informix home directory, say
/usr/informix/disks, place the rootdbs file there, and modify the ONCONFIG
file to ROOTDBS /usr/informix/disks/rootdbs. Reserve /dev for device driver
files.

In that case THEY should be slapped! I always install Informix into a
subdirectory named after the version and make the INFORMIXDIR point to a
generic link that I can point to the "current" version so that upgrading
and reversion is very fast, I can install new software without shutting
down the engine until it is time to start the new version, and I do not
have to deal with dozens of calls afterwards about not being able to access
the engine all of which I have to answer "Didn't you see the message to
log out and back in?".

Argghh! I buy this one and used to keep the chunk links in /i (kept the
name short because of the limits on chunkname length versus number of
chunks in OL5.xx) but started using ~informix/disks for new 7.xx
installations and making /i a link to ~informix/disks on older ones two
years ago. I wanted to get the directory out of the pervue of the
sysadmins and into my own territory. Let me suggest a compromise is the
interrum solution I used, make ~informix/disks and put links to chunks
there but also link that directory to say /ifmx_disks and use that as the
path for onspaces. That way you keep control and remain independent of
the sysadmins whims to more /home or whatever.
