sysattrtypes Growing Fast
Posted in 2016
A DBA on IDS 11.70.FC7W2 (Solaris) found sysattrtypes ballooning to 26M+ rows, growing ~1.7M/week, despite not using complex types. Replies identified the cause: hierarchical queries using CONNECT BY create a new temporary complex type in sysattrtypes on every execution and never reuse or delete them — a known bug fixed in later 12.10 fixpacks; the advice was to open a PMR. The poster confirmed by testing. Workaround suggested: carefully delete the stale rows, but unload/back them up first and avoid removing rows belonging to active datablade/TimeSeries or named/unnamed ROW types. Also check onstat -g cac typen.

Hi, We are running Informix 11.70.FC7W2 on Solaris. I noticed there is a system table in our DB called sysattrtypes that has been growing fast and currently has over 26 million records. The table recently starting growing by over 1.7 million records each week. According to the manual, "The sysattrtypes system catalog table contains information about members of a complex data type. Each row of sysattrtypes contains information about elements of a collection data type or fields of a row data type." I am not aware that we are using complex data types or why it would be growing so rapidly. Any ideas? Thank You, --Dave --047d7b5d83fd711f6e05402ad660

Dave: If you use any hierarchical queries (ie using CONNECT BY) that query will create one or more temporary complex types in sysattrtypes which are never reused or deleted. You can delete MOST of the rows in that table. HOWEVER - BE VERY CAREFUL. Timeseries and other datablades also create records in this catalog table when blade specific types are created as do unnamed and named ROW types. If you delete any of the records related to those types that are still active you may damage your database's functionality beyond simple repair. To be safe, unload the table (or at least those rows you are about to delete) before deleting any rows so you can restore them if needed. Note that if you use my "myschema" utility's --dependency-order option to print your schema in dependency order (ie parent DDL before child DDL) it uses hierarchical queries to accomplish that, so it will be responsible for some of these sysattrtype records. Myexport's -O option uses this myschema feature. Report as a bug that Informix does not drop the temporary types created by CONNECT BY hierarchical queries! Art Art S. I don't think reporting that CONNECT BY could create entries in that table as a bug would be necessary :) On Mon, Oct 31, 2016 at 3:42 PM, Art Kagel <art.kagel@gmail.com> wrote: > Dave: > > If you use any hierarchical queries (ie using CONNECT BY) that query will > create one or more temporary complex types in sysattrtypes which are never > reused or deleted. Fernando: It is not a bug that CONNECT BY creates records for the temporary types that it uses, however, the fact that it create NEW temporary types every time it is run and never deletes them IS a bug in my book. It is fixed in later releases of v12.10, I don't know that it was fixed in v11.70. Art Art S. Thank you all. Yes I tested and am confirming that every time a SQL with the connect by runs it inserts new records in the sysattrtypes table and does not clear it out. Certainly a bug in my book as well. Maybe Informix could use temporary tables for the connect by instead of a systable.
