You can do a "what" on the source to get the version number (even out of a comment), then an "mcs" (if you have it, maybe it's a SVR4ism) to tack the string onto the end of the comment section of the object file. eg: In your 4gl source you have a comment such as: # %Z% PATTERN %M% %I% %E %U% Then at compile time (eg adapt this for a makefile): comment=`what $file.4gl | grep PATTERN` c4gl -c $file.4gl mcs -a "$comment" $file.o c4gl -o$file.4ge $file.o This is a really rough outline, for a simple example, but the idea can be applied to more complex examples. Alternatively, if you whack the SCCS id into a variable then it isn't necessarily a total waste of a variable assignment. eg: define version char(80) main let version = "%Z%%M% %I% (Last changed: %E% %U%)" if arg_val(1) = "-V" then display version clipped exit program(0) end if ... We do this, plus have a standard fn-key to display the program version number while in input stmts and menus.
