Re: Unix- HELP! Are we being bluffed?

Greg,
What a pickle.
1. Linking Windows for workgroups to your fourgen application: it depends. If
you are wanting to run a fourgen session from a window - you will need a
terminal emulator. If you want to directly access your data from within a
windows application like MS access (for decision support) or MS word (for mail
merging), you will need an ODBC driver, this is the middleware that allows
pc applications to talk direct to the database, try OpenLink or VisionWare.
These ODBC drivers in turn run over network protocols like tcp/ip or novell.
2. Informix-Net is not a terminal emulator, it functions like an ODBC driver
but is proprietary to informix, expensive and hungry for you pc's conventional
memory.
3. Remapping keyboards is done via unix's termcap and terminfo files, it is not
a job for a newbie.
4. Fourgen is to my knowledge strictly an application generator for a character
based environment.
5. Sizing: Fourgen is a lower case tool: a fifth generation language if you
like. It is a code generator for 4gl, which in turn is a code generator for
"c" (or a tokenizer for the p-code runner). The down side of all this is an
application that is very hungry for system resources. Do you have the same
performance problems with sql queries run through dbaccess as with fourgen?
How does performance degrade with the number of fourgen users? Use the Unix
sar utility to see where your bottlenecks are. Online is fast, and pretty near
bullet proof but it needs a lot of configuring to work properly.
Defragging: Don't worry about it unless your file systems get very full;
Unix SVR4 is pretty smart about handling disk blocks, as is Online. It is
unlikely to be the root of your performance problems.
You need to do two things: find a systems integrator who knows what (s)he is
doing, and get yourself more time.
Best of luck,
Pete
