Bottom line: We use Oracle, MySQL, MS_SQL, and INFORMIX all in one machine room and by far, we have less overhead and maintenance with INFORMIX. We unload our INFORMIX (about 50GB of it, anyway) to a MySQL server nightly so we can do a bunch of number crunching and data change/what if kinds of things and MySQL is no where NEAR as efficient as INFORMIX. Last I heard mysql does no type checking on values inserted into a table. You can insert the string "big dog" into an integer field and get no errors! Great for data integrity!
