I would consider it to be a major selling point for NewEra. I agree that you would lose a lot of the capabilities of the GUI environment. Despite this many applications contain some data entry screens where the requirement for speed and a cheap, reliable data entry vehicle far outweighs the benefits of providing a GUI windowed interface with all the bells and whistles. In fact in many cases a GUI is just not up to the job. The advantage to the developer of having both is that he can develop a single application (Eg Stock Control). All the management activities, analysis, back office work is done in nice GUI environment to work on the back office PC's. Plus, without having to drop out to C or use any other alternative and with all the abilities of the various class libriaries available, an ascii interface for the shop floor terminals (ascii terminals, scanners, modems, bar code readers/printers, etc) can be built.
