I don't know the current ->strategy with regards to ascii terminals; in theory, a VCL (visual class ->library) could be created for such an interface. However, it seems a lot of ->the "point" (if you will) of NewEra would be lost in a non-GUI environment. Actually, we were told at the user conference that while NewEra had been planned initially as both a GUI and character based product, that the initial performance with character was so poor, that all of the character based code was removed from the product so it could be released. This is an enormous concern to many of us (and I think we made it clear to the powers that be at Informix that this is a problem). Many of us need to be able to operate in either a character based or a GUI environment. I will stick to 4GL until this is the case. I cannot maintain two sets of program code - one for GUI and the other for character based users. Neither is it economically feasible to provide all of my users anything besides dumb terminals. The commitment we were able to get from Informix at the User Conference, is that they would make an effort to get it into thee character based world - if it made sense. I think they realize that it would be a good business decision, but they are very concerned about the performance. I personally believe that this should not be an overwhelming hurdle as there are always different ways of approaching a problem. I hope Informix is able to find them. I would like to be able to use this product once the price looks reasonable and it runs on UNIX in GUI or character based mode. And I really hope the 4GL product has a good future until then!
