Is there a limit on number of logs for 7.31?

I'm trying to add more logs to a 7.31 DB and it won't come up if
ONCONFIG
LOGFILES parameter is over 150. I didn't see any mention of this in the
release notes. But oninit won't bring up the DB if I try to raise that
number.

There is no
hard and fast rule that I am aware of. I
ran a database where we had over 800 logs. You might
want to check for a disk space issue or any additional
error message showing up either on the screen as you
do oninit -v, or in the online log.

Hi,
You haven't reached the limit for the number of logs. Where are your logs;
in which dbspace?
It looks like you have your logs in the rootdbs which is not sufficient
enough to hold more than 150 logs or in another dbspace that is not big
enough. It also depends on the size of the individual log.
Check your dbspace size and check LOGSIZE*LOGFILES . If you want more logs,
either lower the value of LOGSIZE or add more logs in another dbspace. You
can also have logs of different sizes if like.
What I would advice is to have a dedicated logs dbspace. There is no benefit
in having logs across dbspaces since only one of the logs is being written
to at on point in time. This dedicated should big enough to hold all the
logs needed. You should calibrate the number of logs needed with respect to
large transactions in order not to run in long transactions (check LTWHWM
and LTXEHWM); never increase LTXHWM above 50% or LTXEWH abiove 60% if you
don't want to lock your engine and have the Informix tech support connect to
your site to help you with one of the many tb... tools.
At the beginning, all of the logs are in the rootdbs. Then create new ones
(as many as needed) in the dedicated dbspace. Then drop the logs from
rootdbs. Remember that logs could only be added in quiescent mode and
activated after archiving the instance either through ontape or onbar or
onarchive (for those few using this tool).
Version 9.4 of the IDS engine offers the possibility to have dynamic logs;
check the documentation for this.
I hope that this clears things up for you.

Darrell,
What is the LOGSMAX parameter in the onconfig file set to? Is it set to at
least 150? You need to have a value high enough for LOGSMAX to then allow you
to create the logical log files. You can not use more logical log files than
is shown for LOGSMAX. How many actual logical log files did you create? How
many logical log files are shown when the server is up and you execute an
onstat -l?
In what dbspace are you creating the logical files in? You can do a oncheck
-pe > oncheck_pe.out. Then look at the output for the dspace where the logical
logs are to see how many logical log files were actually created.

Bruce

Actually,
we've found that having logs in two
different dbspaces with each successive log
alternating between the two dbspaces is best. If you
have or plan to have automatic backup of logical logs,
it's nice to not have the reading of the just finished
log (for backup purposes) interfering with the writing
of the new log. On a low-activity database it
shouldn't matter much, but on a high-activity OLTP
database, it can help.
