This is a fairly serious shortcoming in SPL; no subreferencing. The first thing I ever tried in SPL was create a soundex function, and this limitation stopped me short. There's a feature request to add this to a future version (I know it's not a good answer, but I thought I'd mention it). I gave up; but on thinking about it now you might try inserting the string in a TEMP table and then fetching the substring from it, since I believe SELECT ss[45] FROM table is valid syntax.
