Join between 32-bit and 64-bit servers
Posted in 1999
Hi Family! I have been pushing my users to start upgrading to 7.3x and I may have started to make some headway on this. In my environment, most of the queries (and many of the updates) processed by my engine come in from another server, often as part of a join between the database on the remote server and my server. Similarly, there are transactions that involve both servers (2-phase commit). My group does not control the remote server. A couple of "what if" concerns were raised about what would happen when we upgrade my server to 7.3 while the remote server remains at 7.23 fr the time being: 1. If both servers are the 32-bit, will the cross-server joins be adversely affected? I doubt it but I'd like to hear from someone who's been there and done that. 2. If my 7.3 server is installed (or configured?) for 64 bits, will the cross-server jois be affected? Now I'm not so certain it will all be fine. 3. Would a transaction involving both servers (32-bit and the 64-bit) be considered a heterogeneous transaction? If yes, what extra overhead would be required tp support it and how would performance be affected? I noticed a configuration parameter: HETERO_COMMIT. Would this be involved in such a transaction? Thanks much. +---- Jacob Salomon - DBA JSalomon@bn.com - ---------------------------+ |--------------- Obligatory sesquipedalian obfuscation: ---------------| | An object of igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic mineral in combined | | states of elevated linear and rotational kinetic energy acquires no | | accumulation of bryophytic vegetation. | +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know.
