You might want to do a test with the OpenLink multi tier drivers (http://www.openlinksw.com) and compare that to ESQL/C. For such a test you should do some tuning on installation such as setting similar paramters as the fetch buffer size in the ODBC driver. I also think this driver will utilize the fetch buffer size on the server side in the communication with the engine. Check the 7.3 documentation on how to set it up.
