listener-thread: err = -25573: oserr = 72
Posted in 2013
On IDS 11.50.FC6 under AIX 6.1, the online log showed intermittent "listener-thread: err = -25573: oserr = 72: Network driver cannot accept a connection on the port" messages, plus several stack-trace files. Respondents explained the stack traces were likely from onmode -X s / a SYSALARMPROGRAM or support data-collection script, not a new feature. Suggested causes for the -25573 were a transient NIC/routing hiccup, DNS slowness (check if netstat -a stalls), too few open file descriptors, or an undersized TCP backlog / MAX_INCOMPLETE_CONNECTIONS and LISTEN_TIMEOUT settings. The poster said the condition cleared after a few minutes; no definitive root cause or fix is recorded.

Response:
The stack trace messages are likely from somebody running onmode -X s <virtual
processor id>. It looks like somebody ran that command for several of your
instances virtual processors. If you got some sort of data collection script
from support, it will often include such a command.

Can it be some type of port/network congestion on the local server, from re= mote/local servers? Is it an Informix database issue or just Informix knowing there is a networ= k issue? Could it be too many port connections (max) threshold being hit and Informi= x knows to stop new connections, until reduced to lower connections? Why does Informix know, but not the Network or System Admin. They can't se= e any issue, but Informix does? Is there a remedy or monitor for this and if so by Informix or others? When it happens, if you try an "netstat -a" does it "hang"... When I write "hang", I mean small hangs, then a little more output, another hang etc...? If this happens you have DNS issues. It could also happen if the number of open files is not enough, but I think in most modern environments this would be hard to happen... unless your hard limits are tight. It could have just been a momentary hiccup in the NIC that didn't express
for long enough to be noticed by the OS monitoring but that caught a few
Informix packets in transit. Does the problem persist or was it transitory?
FWIW: As was mentioned, the stack traces were probably generated by the
SYSALARMPROGRAM script.

It would be interesting to see your $ONCONFIG parameters:
MAX_INCOMPLETE_CONNECTIONS
LISTEN_TIMEOUT
There are also TCP/IP parameters (and probably monitoring commands) that
define or show the "tcp backlog"... This would be the number of connection
attempts in pending state on a certain TCP/IP port... If this are set too
small and you have lot's of incoming connection attempts, new ones may be
dropped...

Response: Ok, so if you are concerned about the listener thread error, then what it specifically means is this. The listener thread was trying to do the socket level accept call to, and the accept call returned error 72 which is ECONNABORTED, which would imply that before the server was able to complete the accept of the client, the client had shutdown their endpoint. So it's not a server problem at all, it's just reporting that a network connection couldn't be established because during the accept call the other side closed their end of the connection pair already. You can check the man page for accept() and then look for error 72 in /usr/include/errno.h and see that's it's ECONNABORTED. Jacques Renaut IBM Informix Advanced Support APD Team

It would be interesting to see your $ONCONFIG parameters:=20
MAX_INCOMPLETE_CONNECTIONS
LISTEN_TIMEOUT=20
There are also TCP/IP parameters (and probably monitoring commands) that de=
fine or show the "tcp backlog"... This would be the number of connection at=
tempts in pending state on a certain TCP/IP port... If this are set too sma=
ll and you have lot's of incoming connection attempts, new ones may be drop=

Resolution to this type of problem also includes adding the remote (application) server to the local database servers' hosts file , and/or changing the order of host lookup in the hosts file; the disabling of DNS lookup when authentication was switched to local but not carried out properly.
Thanks everyone for your replies. Check /usr/include/errno.h and all files included from there, what is error 72 on your platform? David.
