RE: 4GL authoring programs.

I know the fourgen CASE tools can do this, you draw your screen and then export it, then run a program and it generates the 4gl for the screen, it can also do this for reports. The code can be modified by merging in extent files to change the original source. Sounds good so far. Here are the catches, extensive changes can be quite difficult to code and performance might not be acceptable, but alas, this is a general problem with generic code generators. ===================================================================== Paul Watje Database Something or Another watjep@hasting.com Hastings Books, Music, & Video ---------- From: ilist To: informix-list Subject: 4GL authoring programs. Date: Friday, May 12, 1995 12:05AM I have been writing informix code for a long time and have always copied other programs and used them as prototypes when creating new programs. It seems to me there must be a better way to do this. Are there any programs out there that will help one create a master/detail relationship into a form and create a 4GL program to manipulate them automatically? Then the program would only have to add special cases around the input statements in order to check the data being keyed. I use powerbuilder for GUI programming - and it does this quite nicely. It makes me wish I could do the same thing for the character based applications that we are often asked to create. Another nice program would be a report writer for Informix that builds nice looking reports (boxes, columns etc) to output to postscript printers. Is there such a thing or am I dreaming? Any pointers are appreciated. -- Daniel Wynalda/N8KUD/SYSOP |Consultants Connection BBS | 616-363-6680 danielw@wybbs.wynalda.com |2783 Sandalwood Ct NE | Grand Rapids, MI 49505
