Informix 6.0 bug
Posted in 1995
I was asked to post this for a person at another organization who does not have e-mail or Internet access. Please post or send me any responses and I will make sure they get forwarded to the person with the problem: On the SUN platform using INFORMIX 6.0 engine and 6.0 RDS compiler, the following bug is encountered. While running a batch job that may incorporate a cursor which may call functions that actively perform updates, deletes, or inserts, the 4gl application will give a runtime error -4339 memory allocation error. This is a bug known to Informix (bug #30856). This will become more pronounced as the size of the tables that are worked with increase and as the size of the data file being applied to this table or tables increases. Our particular sizes are 2,000,000 row tables with update files ranging from 50,000 to 285,000 records. This problem can be monitored by starting your 4gl application and monitoring the process in UNIX with a ps -eal command. Watch the size of the application. The size will grow until it exceeds your UNIX (machine dependent) allowable process size. We presently are required to run our 6.0 engine with our 4.1 RDS compiler to get through these jobs. This requires us to use the RELAY MODULE (sqlrm). The relay module causes these batch jobs to run extremely slow, possibly adding as much as 300% overhead to our jobs. We have open calls on the problem and are receiving attention from Informix. Their response so far is that it will be fixed in 6.01ud1 RDS compiler release. As of this date we have received no exact date of when this software will be released. I strongly recommend that anyone on 5.0 that uses some batch applications avoid going to 6.0 until this is fixed. If anyone knows of any work arounds, release dates, etc, please write.
