Re: Informix and VB 6

The ODBC should work fine, though I've heard the DAO
interface both integrates, and offers some OOP API
methods that make it more attractive to the programmer.
When all is said and done, it'll probably still be
using the ODBC interface though.. VB hides the real
method of access behind the curtains.. so don't
worry about it.
As a start though, I'd define a global DSN and
work with it through that.
"Don't forget" Informix is an "authenticated" database,
that means you "must" create a user and password with
the IPass program.. and unless you make him an admin/DBA
privledge user.. you'll have to precreate the database,
even if it has no tables to start, using an admin account,
DB Explorer can do this for you... point and clickee..
"then" use SQL to "grant" that user privledges, either
individually, or "godhood" over that database, as in:
GRANT dba TO mickymouse;
All this "security" will be new to you if your a Windows
only type of person, its benefit only becomes apparent when
you start thinking about someone in India accessing your
database without your permission.. then the trouble starts
looking really worth it.
